Hello folks, the editor here. It turns out I’m back in Dayton, and it also turns out that the Dayton Daily News is as mediocre and disappointing as ever. Big surprise! Rather than give them anymore attention than they already deserve, or link love, I figure I’ll just comment in general on the greater Dayton area and issues thereof and go from there. I like the domain name, even with the negative connotations. Sometimes it is only through failure that we can see the truth. That has certainly been the case for me in some regards. Like so many other blogs, I’ll be offering my own take on social, political, and technological issues. To start out, I’ll say this: we as a nation are not out of the woods economically. The stimulus, for the most part, has not been spent, but even when it is spent, it will largely benefit those that are already wealthy, the lobbyists and their friends on Wall Street, not those of us on Main Street. Besides, it will run out and not change the fundamentals of the economy. A full recovery from this economic depression remains to be seen. Double digit inflation, rampant foreclosure, and so many people in jail and prison that it makes the head spin. Oh, and government budgets that can’t be funded from existing revenue. Oh, and dear reader, I couldn’t care less what your party affiliation is, both parties are guilty of horrible crimes against budgets, logic, and etcetera. Myself, I’m a registered independent after a conservative Republican upbringing, so I guess now you could call me a political “realist” if labels are your thing. Good luck with that (the labels, I mean). Have a great day, it’s supposed to be 70 out. Spring is really here!

DAYTON — Nine property appraisers working for Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer contributed to his campaign coffers last year, providing him with $7,535 of the $27,985 he raised, according to annual campaign finance reports filed with the Montgomery County Board of Elections.

One of the contributors was Plummer’s sister, Kimberly Solomon, who gave him $1,100. Last month in the wake of controversy over her hiring, Plummer removed her from the no-bid job that paid her $141,763 last year.

The only appraisers who did not contribute were two whose jobs Plummer phased out last year, Stephen Rigler and James L. Ullmer, both of Brookville.

The driver of a semi-trailer that slammed into a shuttle bus earlier this month, killing four people, told state troopers the truck sped up on its own just before the crash on Interstate 70.

In a report released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Zygmunt W. Wieckowski, 54, of Chicago, told troopers that he took his foot off the accelerator before the fatal crash on Jan. 7 but he could still hear the engine speeding up.

But in an interview contained in the report, Wieckowski told troopers the truck began to move side-to-side on the snow and ice-covered roads.
